Social Sciences Libraries

Many Social Science libraries are associated with academic departments of major research universities, with the exception of selected private or grant funded organizations. These libraries contain collections much like many other libraries, consisting of books, journals, microform, AV and many other forms of media and print. These libraries also hold many special collections, ranging from memorabilia (posters, t-shirts, novelty items, etc.) from a specific era as well as photographs, rare books, and dissertations to digital records of oral traditions. The subject matter of social science libraries also ranges greatly, including, but not limited to: anthropology, sociology, education, political science, gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender, psychology, as well as paranormal divisions, Asian and African-American archives, and any other specialized socio-cultural assemblage. This diverse mixture of fields can only be grouped together in one category, special libraries/collections. This melting pot of information continues to grow fervently as ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘diversity’ has become the cornerstones of our society, and the door to understanding and a true sense of community relies on the education we seize from these institutions.
